Capture your customers' ID card data via NFC,
with or without biometric verification

One link. Your customer taps their ID card against the phone's NFC — just like a contactless payment — and their data is cryptographically verified in seconds. And when you need to confirm the person presenting the document is its holder, add biometric verification with liveness detection. No OCR. No passwords. No friction.

Reading the NFC chip on an ID card: hold the card behind the phone, just like a contactless payment
📋

The ENISA "Remote ID Proofing — Good Practices" (2024) report identifies reading a document's NFC chip as one of the two most notable good practices for validating identity remotely, able to curb deepfakes and synthetic attacks thanks to the chip's cryptographic verification. It's also the direction reinforced by the eIDAS 2 regulation. Read the summary →

How it works

One link. Four steps.
Data verified instantly.

Your business sends a link to the user. The rest happens on their phone. You receive the verified data. YOiD stores nothing.

1

Your app sends the link

With one API call, you generate a unique link and send it to the user via SMS, email or inside your own app.

2

The user enters the CAN

They type the 6-digit code found in the bottom-right corner of the ID card. No additional passwords.

3

Scan the ID card via NFC

They hold the card to the back of the phone. The NFC antenna reads the chip automatically. On iOS, nothing to download.

Optional
4

Biometric verification

Compare the photo from the chip against a real-time selfie to confirm it's the same person.

Interactive demo

What your user
actually sees

Four real states of the NFC flow. Click to see each screen.

Step 1: scan the QR code to access the NFC service Step 2: enter the ID card's CAN Step 3: hold the ID card as if paying with your phone Step 4: data verified instantly

The real flow,
screen by screen

Real screenshots from the YOiD app. The user completes all four steps in under 60 seconds, with nothing to install on iOS.

📱
No downloads on iOS
On iPhone, the link launches the system's native NFC reader directly. The user installs nothing. Zero friction on the majority platform.
🔐
PKI verification, not OCR
The chip's data is cryptographically verified against the official certificates. Impossible to forge. Far more secure than optical reads.
No typing errors
The identifying data is read directly from the chip. No OCR, no manual transcription, no spelling or formatting errors.

Standalone module or integrated with NFC

Can be used as an extra step within the full NFC flow, or as a standalone service when the ID card was already captured at another point.

Especially useful for re-authentication processes: high-value payments, access to sensitive information, document signing.

  • Liveness detection included
  • Resistant to photo or screen replay attacks
  • Result in under 3 seconds
  • YOiD stores no biometric data
  • GDPR compliance by design
Compatibility

Native experience on iOS.
App on Android.

The experience varies by platform. We explain it with full transparency.

🍎
iOS
Native experience

The link opens a native mini-service directly that activates the device's NFC reader. The user downloads nothing. The iPhone's NFC antenna is in the upper-back corner, near the camera.

  • No app download
  • Direct activation from the link
  • Compatible with iPhone 7 onward (iOS 13+)
  • Integrated into the customer's app flow
Positioning: bring the ID card's chip close to the upper-back corner of the iPhone, near the camera. Hold it still until the read completes (3-8 seconds).
🤖
Android
Requires app

The link takes the user to download the YOiD app from the Play Store. The NFC antenna's position varies by manufacturer — which is why the app actively guides the user with a search animation.

  • One-time download from the Play Store
  • Same process as iOS once installed
  • Compatible with Android 6.0+ (9+ recommended)
  • NFC available on virtually all modern devices
Positioning: slowly move the ID card across the back of the phone, over the area you use for contactless payments. Once the antenna detects the chip, the phone will vibrate.
Why choose YOiD NFC

The most reliable
and easy-to-use identity verification

The digital equivalent of showing your ID card. With the advantage of automatic cryptographic verification.

+95%

Technical specifications

What your
development team needs

Simple integration. Complete documentation. Direct support from YOiD's technical team.

Integration

The SDK integrates via a single REST call to generate the session link. The result is received via webhook or polling. No mandatory client libraries.

// Generate an NFC session POST /v1/sessions/nfc { "redirect_url": "https://your-app.com/callback", "fields": ["name", "dni", "dob"] }
Data extracted

From the Spanish ID card's chip you obtain: full name, ID/foreigner number, date of birth, sex, expiry date, address and digital photograph. All cryptographically verified against the FNMT.

Security and privacy

YOiD stores no personal data. Only a session hash is kept for audit purposes. Data is transmitted encrypted (TLS 1.3) and delivered directly to the customer's API.

Compatible documents

Spanish DNIe (with NFC chip since 2015), NIE with chip, and standard ICAO 9303 ePassports. Compatible with any European ID card that meets the eMRTD standard.

Frequently asked questions

We answer your questions

If you have a question that isn't answered here, contact us.

Which ID cards can be read?

+
The DNIe 3.0, issued in Spain since 2015, includes an NFC chip. The NIE with chip is also compatible. Both meet the eMRTD (ICAO 9303) standard, so European electronic passports are compatible too.

Is the chip's data reliable?

+
Yes. The DNIe chip meets European electronic authentication and security standards. YOiD verifies the chip's authenticity against the FNMT's official certificates. It's impossible to forge a chip that passes this cryptographic check.

Which iOS and Android versions are compatible?

+
On iOS: version 13 or higher and iPhone 7 or higher (with NFC antenna). On Android: 6.0 minimum, though Android 9 or higher is recommended for the best experience. The Android device must have an NFC antenna, available on virtually all modern smartphones.

Is it secure? Does it access the ID card's PIN?

+
It's equivalent to physically showing your ID card. Since it doesn't require the DNIe's PIN, the service only reads the document's public layer (name, date of birth, photo, etc.), with no access to the private layer of signature certificates.

What data exactly is read from the chip?

+
From the Spanish ID card's chip: full name, ID/foreigner number, date of birth, sex, expiry date, address and digital photograph. These are the same fields visible on the physical card, but obtained cryptographically and verified automatically.

How long does the reading take?

+
The full chip read takes 3-8 seconds once the ID card is correctly positioned. The whole process for the user (entering the CAN + reading the chip + getting the result) usually takes under 30 seconds under normal conditions.
